Bylaws: The Department of International Relations, Yonsei Graduate School

  1. 1.Graduate school department's specific major

① The Graduate School of International Relations has a general major in International Relations and a specific major in Global and Area Studies. The new students in each major are recruited independently under the general regulations of the graduate school.

 

  1. 2.Admission Process

① The department committee will conduct the written review and oral examination separately as follows: the committee will average the individual evaluation results of the judges to come up with the final results;

② For other matters related to admission, comply with the general admission rules for ordinary higher education institutions.

 

2-1 Material Review

① The material review scores for the master’s Program, Integrated Bachelor-Master's Program, Integrated master's and doctoral program, and Doctoral program total 200 points (Academic plan total score of 100 points. University grades total score of 100 points).

② Detailed evaluation criteria for material review are as follows:

- Professional relevance: 30 points

- Adequacy of the plan: 20 points

- Feasibility of the plan: 30 points

- Connectivity to undergraduate majors: 20 points

 

Evaluation Principles Based on undergraduate (graduate school) grades with a total score of 4.5, the standards are set as follows:

 

4.3 to 4.5: 100 points

Above 4.1 to below 4.3: 90 points,

Above 3.9 to below 4.1: 85 points, Above 3.7 to below 3.9: 80 points, Above 3.5 to below 3.7: 78 points, Above 3.0 to below 3.5: 76 points, Above 2.5 to below 3.0: 74 points, Below 2.5: 70 points.

 

Note: In line with the characteristics of the college or department, the evaluation method for college (department) grades can be adjusted. Language scores, including English, can also be used to prove the applicant's academic abilities.

 

③ If the average scores for the study plan and university grades both exceed 80 points, with a total score exceeding 160 points, the candidate will be judged as qualified.

④ If the average scores for the study plan and university grades are above 80 points but the total score is below 160 points, the candidate will be judged as not qualified; however, if necessary, they may be re-evaluated for academic ability through an oral examination to determine qualification.

⑤ Among the new students of the Global and Area Studies Program, foreign students who have not submitted a recognized TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) level 3 or higher score must complete more than 400 hours of Korean language courses at the university's Foreign Language Hall or Korean Language Training Course before the start of the third semester.

 

2-2Oral Examination

① After the material evaluation, an oral examination may be conducted if necessary.

② The total score for the oral examination for the master's degree program, combined master's and doctoral program, and doctoral degree program is 100 points. The specific scores are Knowledge of the field: 80 points; Research enthusiasm and attitude: 10 points; Professional ability: 10 points.

③ A score of 80 points or above is considered passing.

Master's Program and Integrated Bachelor-Master's Program

Of the 30 credits required for the degree, at least 18 credits must be obtained from courses offered by this discipline. The remaining credits can be substituted by courses from other disciplines with the approval of the chief professor.

With the approval of the mentor and the department committee, the thesis topic must be determined before the last semester before the entry of the degree thesis proposal.

Before the final approval of the degree thesis, at least one academic paper must be published or accepted for publication in domestic or international academic journals with the student as the primary author (first author/corresponding author).

 

However, if the paper has three or fewer co-authors and the contribution is recognized whether the publication meets the graduation requirements needs to be determined through a disciplinary meeting.

Doctoral Program

Of the 30 credits required for the degree, at least 18 credits must be obtained from courses offered by this discipline. The remaining credits can be substituted by courses from other disciplines with the approval of the chief professor.

With the approval of the mentor and the department committee, the thesis topic must be determined before the last semester before the entry of the degree thesis proposal.

Before the final approval of the degree thesis, at least one academic paper must be published or accepted for publication in domestic or international academic journals with the student as the primary author (first author/corresponding author).

Integrated Master's and Doctoral Program

Of the 54 credits required for the degree, at least 27 credits should be obtained from courses offered by this discipline. However, with the approval of the chief professor, they can be substituted by courses from other disciplines.

With the approval of the mentor and the department committee, the thesis topic must be determined before the last semester before the entry of the degree thesis proposal.

Before the final approval of the degree thesis, at least two academic papers must be published or accepted for publication in domestic and international academic journals with the student as the primary author (first author/corresponding author).

With the approval of the mentor and the department committee, the thesis topic must be determined before the last semester before the entry of the degree thesis proposal.

Before the final approval of the degree thesis, at least one academic paper must be published or accepted for publication in domestic or international academic journals with the student as the primary author (first author/corresponding author).

 

However, if the paper has three or fewer co-authors and the contribution is recognized whether the publication meets the graduation requirements needs to be determined through a disciplinary meeting.

  1. 4.Qualification Examination

① Up until the semester before the degree thesis proposal is entered into the system, the conditions for the comprehensive examination and the foreign language examination must be met; whether these conditions are met will be finally determined with the approval of the Dean of the Graduate School.

 

4-1foreign Language Examination

① The foreign language examination scores for integrated bachelor's and master's programs and master's degree courses must be TOEFL 79 or TOEIC 760 or above.

② The foreign language test scores for integrated master's and doctoral programs and doctoral degree courses must be TOEFL 91 or TOEIC 800 or above.

③ Foreign students must obtain a Korean language TOPIK level 4 or higher or study a TOPIK level 4 or higher course at the university's Foreign Language Hall or Korean language advancement course.

④ However, if the Professional Professor Committee deems necessary, a disciplinary self-examination can replace the foreign language examination. This examination is an oral test conducted by a person (or two people) other than the supervisor, assessing language ability related to the major, with a full score of 100 points, requiring a score of 80 or above. (This regulation applies to students enrolled from the second semester of the 2022 academic year.)

⑤ For the Global and Area Studies program, the self-examination in section ④ can be conducted under the chairmanship of one or more professors of the discipline, including the chief professor of the major. However, by the time of graduation review, the conditions in section ③, that is, TOPIK level 4, must be met. (This regulation applies retrospectively to students enrolled from the second semester of the 2022 academic year.)

 

4-2Comprehensive Examination

① Eligibility: Determined to have obtained more than 21 credits in this graduate course; of these, 6 credits (two courses) can be substituted by professional courses offered by other disciplines. Additionally, passing the foreign language examination is not a prerequisite for participating in the comprehensive examination. However, additional eligibility requirements can be designated for the Global and Area Studies course. (This regulation can be applied retrospectively to students enrolled from the second semester of the 2022 academic year.)

② Examination process: Students wishing to take the comprehensive examination must submit a copy of their transcript to the chief professor of the department, who after approving eligibility, will register them for the examination.

③ Examination dates: Conducted at the beginning of July and January each year.

④ Examination method:

  1. For integrated bachelor's and master's programs and master's degree courses, no less than two subjects, and for integrated master's and doctoral programs and doctoral degree courses, no less than three subjects, should be taken in the written comprehensive examination by more than two professors.
  2. For the comprehensive examination written test, each subject has a full score of 100 points, with 70 points or above considered passing.
  3. If there are any subjects that failed in the comprehensive examination, one can either retake the failed subject or choose another subject based on the judgment of the teaching professor.

 

  1. 5.Degree Thesis

5-1. Master's Degree and Integrated Bachelor-Master's Program

① After completing two semesters of the graduate school course, the thesis proposal can be submitted to the chief professor at the graduate school and a supervisor can be assigned.

② The department committee must approve the degree thesis research before the last semester of graduation, and an associate examiner professor is also assigned.

③ At the beginning of the semester in preparation for graduation, the degree thesis research proposal is entered into the system with the supervisor's approval, and related materials are submitted to the disciplinary office.

④ The number of thesis committees is three (one chief and two associate examiners). Still, the supervisor (chief examiner) must be selected from the full-time faculty of this school. Only one external examiner who is not a full-time faculty member of this school can participate as an assistant judge. The criteria for external examiners are limited to those who have obtained a doctoral degree in their home country or abroad.

⑤ The degree thesis is to be written in Korean or English.

            

5-2 Integrated Master's and Doctoral Program and Doctoral Degree Course

① After completing two semesters of the graduate school course, the thesis proposal can be submitted to the chief professor at the graduate school and a supervisor can be assigned.

② The department committee must approve the degree thesis research proposal before the beginning of the upcoming last semester of graduation, and an associate examiner professor is also assigned.

③ At the beginning of the semester, before the preparation for graduation, the degree thesis research proposal is entered into the system with the supervisor's approval, and related materials are submitted to the disciplinary office.

④ The number of thesis committees is three (one chief and two associate examiners). Still, the supervisor (chief examiner) must be selected from the full-time faculty of this school. Only one external examiner who is not a full-time faculty member of this school can participate as an assistant judge. The criteria for external examiners are limited to those who have obtained a doctoral degree in their home country or abroad.

⑤ The degree thesis is to be written in English as a principle. However, the thesis for specialized majors in Global and Area Studies must be written in Korean or English. Additionally, if necessary, it can be written in another foreign language with the supervisor's approval.

 

  1. 6.Undergraduate Students Taking Graduate Courses

① With the approval of the department committee and the instructor, students in the bachelor's program may take up to 6 credits of graduate courses. These courses do not count towards the bachelor's program credits, but if the student enrolls in this graduate program, these credits will be included in the total credits required.

 

  1. 7.Courses from Other Graduate Schools

① Regarding courses from other graduate schools, the regulations and internal rules of the general graduate schools and the Mirae campus graduate schools shall apply.

 

  1. 8.Regulation Confirmation Time

① These internal regulations shall apply starting from the students enrolled in the second semester of 2022.
